Enrile (Ibanag: Ili nat Enrile; Ilocano: Ili ti Enrile; Tagalog: Bayan ng Enrile), officially the Municipality of Enrile, is a 3rd class municipality in the province of Cagayan, Philippines. According to the 2015 census, it has a population of 35,834 people.
Enrile’s economy is driven by our agriculture industry, primarily the production of rice, corn, peanuts and mongo crops. Our high school and college graduates have the largest percentage of graduation and promotion to professional occupations in the entire province.
The municipality was named after Spanish governor-general Pasqual Enrile y Alcedo.
Cabug was the original name of Enrile when it was a barrio of Tuguegarao. It was established as a separate town in September 1849 and named in honor of the Spanish Governor General Pascual Enrile during the Spanish regime.
Enrile lies on the southernmost part of Cagayan, bounded by Sta. Maria, Isabela to the south, by the mighty Cagayan River to the east, by Solana and Tuguegarao to the north, Kalinga to the west.
Enrile is predominantly an agricultural town where the majority of its population derive their income from farming. It has a land area of 18,450 hectares unevenly distributed to the 22-barangays of the municipality. Its main products are rice, corn, peanut, tobacco and vegetables.
Enrile is the Southwestern portion of Cagayan. It is the Southwestern gateway to the province via Santiago- Tuguegarao and Kalninga-Tugueagarao road. Enrile is a former barrio of Tuguegarao. It is a village known as “Cabugag” which came from the short term “Cabug”, a local term for hunchback.
The municipality of Enrile, celebrated as the “Home of the Professionals” for decades now is a landlocked Municipality of Cagayan which stands proudly within the southernmost part of the Province and sprawls along the famed Cagayan River and embraced by vast agricultural areas whom farmers embellish and handcraft with peanut and corn by weathering both drought and flood. These diligent peanut growers continually produce peanuts in metric tons thereby contributing 8-10 % to the national domestic supply, making Enrile the highest peanut-producing municipality. Enrile today is best known in the province to its tagmark, “Home of Professionals” and “Peanut Capital of the Philippines.”
